Husbandry

Phanerophthalmus smaragdinus (Rüppell & Leuckart, 1830)

Phanerophthalmus smaragdinus looks like an aglajid and was considered to be a member of that family.

Aglajids are carnivorous, but Phanerophthalmus smaragdinus is a herbivore sea slug closely related to Haminoea. The radula and gizzard, with three grinding chitinous plates are similar to the Haminoea slugs.

The green Phanerophthalmus smaragdinus is a primitive herbivorous slug with an internal shell. The small plate-like shell is partially enclosed in the mantle tissue. The headshield is very small.

Synonyme:
Bulla smaragdina
Cryptophthalmus olivaceus
