It is endemic to New Zealand waters.This nudibranch is highly variable in colour(many colour variations between white, brown and black).Aphelodoris luctuosa feeds on sponges.

Can be commonly found in shallow coastal waters along rocky shorelines in depths of 1 to 15 m.
