Info

Constantinea simplex Setchell, 1901

The Cup and Saucer Seeweed is a whimsically-shaped perennial red alagae. Dark red cups, often split, on short stipes. The blades resemble cups and saucers or inside-out umbrellas.

The current year's growth is the pink cup in the center. Each year a new cup-like blade is grown from the top so you know you have an old specimen when the stipe is long.

Can be found low and mid intertidal on rocks.

Similar to: Constantinea subulifera (Cracked Saucer), size 30 cm in diameter and Constantinea rosa-marina (Northern Cup and Saucer Seaweed), size 15 cm in diameter.
