Info

Cytaeis tetrastyla is a widespread hydrozoan in the family Cytaeididae, pictured is a free-swimming medusa
Hydrozoans are divided into three orders, Hydrozoonea, Siphonophora, and Trachylina.

Members of the genus Cytaeididae go through two distinct life stages in their development, the sessile, asexual form of the hydroid polyp and the form of a free-swimming medusa that reproduces sexually.

Cytaeis tetrastyla is part of the zooplankton and zoobenthos, and occupies an important place in the food chain by feeding on larger carnivorous animals.
