Hutchin's boarfish is endemic to the southern coast of Western Australia, and occurs in temperate coastal waters from eastern Victoria to south-western Western Australia.
It is found on the continental shelf at depths from 5 to 200m, and is the only known member of its genus. This boarfish has a pointed snout, a concave head profile, a very high dorsal fin and a rounded anal fin margin. The body solur is silver to olive-brown with irregular dark bands. There is a distinct ocellus at the rear of the dorsal fin.

Sometimes confused with May the Blackspot Boarfish (Zanclistius elevates), which has a dark blotch on the rear of the dorsal fin rather than an ocellus.
