Terebra subulata (Linnaeus, 1767)
Terebra subulata belongs to the family Terebridae, which are known as screw snails. The shell of screw snails is long, slender and smooth, the operculum is horny. In English-speaking countries, these snails are known as “augers”, which refers to the long, drill-shaped shell.
The auger snail is said to reach a considerable size of up to 20 cm shell length. It feeds on bristle worms (Polychaeta) and acorn worms, which are stung by its radular teeth and poisoned by a venom gland. The venom is said to be effective on these worms, but has no effect on invertebrates.
