Pseudophycis breviuscula (Richardson, 1846)
Pseudophycis breviuscula is a pale reddish-brown small cod that becomes paler toward the underside of the body, with a faint dark line along the upper jaw, a narrow black margin on the dorsal and anal fins, and a broad black margin on the caudal fin.
Pectoral and pelvic fins and the species-typical chin beard are usually whitish.
The small cod differs from similar members of the genus by lacking a black spot and a flat posterior caudal margin (both present in Pseudophycis bachus and Pseudophycis palmata) and by having larger scales than the otherwise very similar Pseudophycis barbata.
Pseudophycis breviuscula can be observed in large rock pools and occurs as far north as the continental shelf.
