Info
Xymene plebeius is a species of sea snail in the family Muricidae, the murex snails or rock snails, and appears to be endemic only around New Zealand (North and South Islands).
The shell snail is found under rocks at low tide and on sheltered sand and mud bottoms.
Xymene plebeius lives predatorily on worms and mollusks, such as the New Zealand cockle (Austrovenus stutchburyi) and the bivalve Paphies australis, appearing to be a beneficiary of the mud whelk (Cominella glandiformis), as it has been observed sucking on mussels drilled by the whelk.
Synonyms:
Fusus inferus Hutton, 1878
Fusus plebeius Hutton, 1873
Xymene inferus (Hutton, 1878)
