In 2022, the scorpionfish Parascorpaena poseidon was first described, a completely new species of scorpionfish or scorpionfish.
This species inhabits mainly rocky reefs that have a depth of 1 meter, based on the living individual.
Coloration:
Specimens of Parascorpaena poseidon vary in coloration, but are primarily brownish to grayish.
The upper half of the lateral body and caudal peduncle are also brownish to grayish, scattered with irregular whitish spots.
Abdomen is pale to grayish, head brownish to grayish.
The underside of the mandible is pale to grayish with brownish speckles.
Small blackish spots are more randomly distributed on the body and each fin.
The base of the pelvic fin is white, grayish distally, and the anal fin appears pale to grayish and is speckled with blackish spots.
All other fins are brownish to grayish.
Etymology:
The new species is named after Poseidon, the Greek god of the sea. Noun in apposition. In allusion to the three equally sized suborbital spines without ridges, those of the trident of Poseidon.
