Info

Minous pictus Günther, 1880

Stickfish are a genus of the devilfish subfamily (Choridactylinae) in the family Synanceiidae. They are small fishes without scales. They live at depths between 10-420 meters on muddy and sandy seabeds and contain venom in their fin rays that can poison a predator if bitten.

Minous pictus is a small fish with a compressed and scaleless body, laterally flattened head, many bony ridges and well-developed spines. The stingray has a rim around the eyes and cirri on the lower jaw. The dorsal fin has flexible spines. The upper side of the body is light brown with pale and dark bands, the underside is pale. The anal fin is pale with dark margins.

The red-cheeked stickleback lives in protected muddy estuaries to deep offshore in mud-sand habitats. It buries itself in the substrate during the day and is therefore rarely seen during the day. The stinging fish is primarily nocturnal.

Minous pictus: Possibility of confusion is strongest with Minous radiatus.
