Info
Cycloes granulosa De Haan, 1837
Calappa is a genus of crabs known commonly as box crabs or shame-faced crabs. Colour is dark brown dorsally and light brown ventrally.
Box crabs get their peculiar name from the way they hold their shovel-like arms in front of their faces. Of course, this has nothing to do with being ashamed, but rather to protect the respiratory system when burrowing into the sand. They crack and eat shells, hermit crabs and other bottom-dwelling animals.
The genus Cycloes currently only includes the two described species Cycloes granulosa De Haan, 1837 and Cycloes marisrubri Galil & Clark, 1996. Cycloes granulosa was also recovered as bycatch in trawler trawls in India from a depth of 110m.
