Info

Panopeus meridionalis Williams, 1983

Mud crabs of the family Panopeidae Ortmann, 1893 are widespread in marine intertidal and shallow intertidal habitats along the temperate and tropical coasts of the Americas.

The mud crab Panopeus meridionalis lives in the intertidal zone of the temperate estuarine waters of the southwest Atlantic from Montevideo (Uruguay) to Mar del Plata (Argentina). It is the least studied species of the former “Panopeus herbstii complex”. The crab is found under stones and rocks in some places in Uruguay and northern Argentina characterized by brackish water, as well as on rocky sea coasts.
