The saw blade-shaped horned tang is endemic to New Zealand. It grows up to 30 cm tall and is very robust. The fronds are irregularly branched, tufted and have a very pronounced zigzag edge. The support is cartilaginous. The color is rich purple and the texture is chewy but supple.
It is found from the low intertidal zone to the upper intertidal zone on vertical surfaces on exposed rocky coasts up to 20 m deep, sometimes slightly deeper.
The species name "colensoi" was given in honor of William Colenso (November 7, 1811 - February 10, 1899), a Christian missionary from Cornwall in New Zealand, as well as a printer, botanist, explorer and politician.
