Info

Tectura virginea (O. F. Müller, 1776)

Tectura virginea is a shell snail from the family Lottiidae, commonly known as owl limpets. They occur on hard substrates such as rocks, but also other snails and seaweed.

The shell of the white turtle snail (Tectura virginea) is 10-12 mm long, has a tip that is 1/4 from the front end, but is not overhanging or curled. The outer surface is smooth except for growth lines. The shell is pink with a blurry darker ray and indistinct whitish spots.

It is particularly likely to be confused with Williamia gussoni, which differs in its more curved profile, with the tip usually curled towards the front edge (similar to a pointed cap).
