Info

Celleporaria brunnea is a small brown bryozoan with a fairly wide distribution, originally thought to originate from the eastern Pacific.

Scientists believe that anthropogenic factors are responsible for the bryozoan's triumph.
While for many other species, the often-cited ballast water from ships is the reason and mechanism for their spread to foreign and distant areas, this does not apply to Celleporaria brunnea from a scientific point of view.

Nevertheless, ships play a decisive role, as bryozoans “travel” in the anti-fouling of ship hulls and thus easily and quickly conquer new habitats.
Since this moss animal was able to adapt very well to the newly colonized areas, Celleporaria brunnea is considered an invasive species.
Even the Mediterranean Sea was successfully colonized by the moss animal after it made its way through the Red Sea and the Suez Canal. Such active and passive immigrants are called Lessepsian migrants.
