Special thanks for the first two fotos to Rudolf Svensen, Norway and to Anders Salesjö, Sweden.
Distribution:
Eastern Atlantic: southwest Iceland and Foldenfjord, Norway to Brittany and Celtic Sea, excluding southern North Sea. Also recorded from Banyuls, western Mediterranean.
Biology:
Found usually offshore, 5-330 m on sand, mud, shell debris, gravel and corallines. Eggs found in mollusk shells, guarded by male.
Eggs are pear-shaped.
Synonymised taxa:
Buenia jeffreysi (Günther, 1867) (misspelling)
Gobius jeffreysi Günther, 1867 (misspelling)
Gobius jeffreysii Günther, 1867
Jumping guard
A jumping guard prevents (nocturnal) fish from jumping out.
Wrasses, blennies, hawkfishs and gobies jump out of an unprotected tank in fright if their night rest is disturbed, unfortunately these jumpers are found dried up in the morning on carpets, glass edges or later behind the tank.

A small night light also helps, as it provides the fish with a means of orientation in the dark!
