Info
Pugettia richii Dana, 1851
This majid crab can grow fairly large. Its rostrum consists of two flattened processes. The carapace is longer than wide.
It has a sharp lateral projection at or behind the middle. The dorsal carapace surface is almost smooth. Colour is greenish brown to maroon dorsally, reddish or yellowish ventrally. Young crabs are brown, red, or olive green in colour.
Similar to the Graceful Kelp Crab (Pugettia gracilis). The Cryptic Kelp Crab (Pugettia richii) differs from the graceful kelp crab (Pugettis gracilis) in that its carapace is covered with spines. Spines on the edges og the carapace are more curved and project at shaper angles, and its pincers are tipped with white, not orange.
The name "richii" refer to William Rich, who went on expedition with Dana, where this crab was discovered.
