Husbandry

Decaisne, 1842

The Udotea has a beautiful, cuplike shape and grows to a maximum height of 15 cm & not to coomon in the aquaria industry and It is good for the intermediate aquarist. The Genus Udotea includes 15 species which are all found in tropical or subtropical marine zones. On the reef these algae which acumulate calcium carbonate often grow in the shadow of corals. In the Great barrier reef are mostly found at depths of more than 10 m, yet sometime in shallow wate, always however in places with low light intensity. The usually tend to grow on live rock. In the wild occurs at a depth range between 2 '' 10 m, it is found on the reef face and fore reef slopes. It also occurs in sea grass beds and rocky reefs but is most common in water less than 40 m (86 feet) in depth. The Placement of the Udotea should be on an exposed area at any place of the aquarium where currents can reach and supply it with necessary nutrients and trace elements, preferable on the sand. It is important to say that all these corals require more than 1 watts per gallon to ensure proper growth and development. Monitor water parameters to ensure optimum skeletal growth and having at least VHO is highly recommended.
