Correct name concerning WoRMS: Xyrichtys halsteadi Randall & Lobel, 2003
Correct name concerning FishBase: Novaculops halsteadi (Randall & Lobel, 2003)
Very special thanks for the first photo of the beautiful and conspicuous Novaculops halsteadi to Scott & Jeanette Johnson from Kwajalein Underwater.
This photo was taken at Marshall Islands, Lagoon Halimeda, Kwajalein Atoll.
Novaculops halsteadi is very rare and found solitary or in small groups near reefs in sand-rubble bottoms and feed on small benthic invertebrates.
Classification: Biota > Animalia (Kingdom) > Chordata (Phylum) > Vertebrata (Subphylum) > Gnathostomata (Superclass) > Pisces (Superclass) > Actinopterygii (Class) > Perciformes (Order) > Labridae (Family) > Novaculops (Genus) > Novaculops halsteadi (Species)
Jumping guard
A jumping guard prevents (nocturnal) fish from jumping out.
Wrasses, blennies, hawkfishs and gobies jump out of an unprotected tank in fright if their night rest is disturbed, unfortunately these jumpers are found dried up in the morning on carpets, glass edges or later behind the tank.

A small night light also helps, as it provides the fish with a means of orientation in the dark!
