Info
Ecsenius paroculus is a little-known small blenny fish that lives alone or in small groups in coastal coral reefs and lagoons.
The blenny fish spends its entire life in areas with coral reefs.
One specimen photographed in the wild on Similan Island in the Andaman Sea was colored in various shades of brown overall.
The stripe behind the eye, the edge of the gill cover, the ocelli on the back, and the sides of the abdomen were dark brown, while other markings were paler.
The body had bright white spots, the brightest of which were located at the front of the body above the pectoral fin base, ventrally at the pectoral fin base, and centrally laterally on the caudal peduncle.
The snout was pink in color, the iris was ventrally light, dorsally dark brown with light spots and a yellow ring around the pupil.
There is evidence that Ecsenius paroculus exhibits both sexual and geographical variation.
Specimens from the Phuket region of Thailand generally have higher average values for meristic characteristics and fewer ocelli than specimens from most other populations of Ecsenius paroculus.
Nothing is currently known about the reproduction of this species.
Etymology:
The species name “paroculus” is derived from the Latin ‘par’ (close) and “oculus” (eye) and refers to the superficial similarity of its color pattern to that of Ecsenius oculus.
