The first determination of this soft coral comes from the waters around the Indian island of Kavaratti in the Arabian Sea.
Further reports come from the Gulf of Mannar Marine National Park in the Laccadiven Sea between India and Sri Lanka.
Sclerophytum kavarattiense is very easy to reproduce, freshly cut cuttings were firmly attached 2 weeks later to the substrate, as the team of scientists from the CAR-Central Marine Fisheries Research Institute in India had already published in July 2014.
Since the reproduction of soft corals is very easy and possible in larger quantities, it can be expected that Sclerophytum kavarattiense.
We would like to take this opportunity to thank Dr. K. Vinod (Principal Scientist) and Dr. A. Gopalakrishnan (Director) of the ICAR-Central Marine Fisheries Research Institute, India, for sending us original photos of the soft coral from the breeding process.
Sclerophytum kavarattiense also surprises in other properties that are less known to aquarists but have been adopted by scientists:
- pharmaceutical substances against the Chikungunya virus transmitted by certain mosquito species
- Recovery of phthalate derivative as a component of PVC materials, paints, ceramics and cosmetics
- Antifouling properties for ship hulls and platforms
- potent anti-inflammatory drug
All life comes from the sea, and even the greatest solutions to human problems are apparently in the sea, but many still have to be discovered.
