Info
Pomacentrus yoshii is known from the southeastern Marshall Islands, particularly around the Majuro and Mili atolls, where the species is common and often forms groups in lagoon reefs and on reef tops.
Interestingly, Pomacentrus yoshii has not been found in the northern part of the Marshall Islands, such as around the well-known Enewetak Atoll. At the time of its original description in 2004, the species was known only from the Majuro and Mili atolls in the eastern Marshall Islands.
The common name “Golden Demoiselle” becomes clear when observing adult specimens. Imagine this demoiselle in full motion in the ocean on a beautiful, sunny day—a true gem.
Regarding the naming:
Pomacentrus yoshii was named in honor of Satoshi Yoshii, a diving instructor in the Marshall Islands, where Satoshi Yoshii handled the logistical organization for the collection of many type specimens.
We would like to extend our heartfelt thanks to Debra Baker, Raphaël Forns, and Roger Rittmaster for the wonderful photos of this golden reef bass.
