Husbandry

Jordan & Gilbert, 1882

Special thanks for the first photo of Ostorhinchus ocellicaudus to Dr. Ross Robertson, Australia.

He has taken this photo at Galapagos, where the parotfish lives in a depth of 3 to 36 meters in shallow coastal waters.

This species is found near rocky and coral reefs and occurs in small aggregations and feeds by scraping the substrate for coralline red algae, and probably on coral polyps.

In Gulf of Chiriqui, Panama, this fish can be found over massive corals, rocky reef and zone of madreporic branching corals.

This species is endemic to the Eastern Pacific, and is found from Baja California and the Gulf of California to northern Peru, including the Galapagos and Malpelo Islands, but common throughout much of its range.

Classification: Biota > Animalia (Kingdom) > Chordata (Phylum) > Vertebrata (Subphylum) > Gnathostomata (Superclass) > Pisces (Superclass) > Actinopteri (Class) > Perciformes (Order) > Labroidei (Suborder) > Scaridae (Family) > Scarinae (Subfamily) > Scarus (Genus) > Scarus perrico (Species)
