Info

Acropora bifaria (Brook, 1892)

The study "A tenuis relationship: traditional taxonomy obscures systematics and biogeography of the 'Acropora tenuis' (Scleractinia: Acroporidae) species complex" from 2023 on Acropora not only led to the first description of two new Acropora species, Acropora rongoi and Acropora tenuissima, but also to completely new findings and a completely new view and classification of Acropora tenuis.

The scientists showed that Acropora tenuis Dana, 1846 is not geographically distributed throughout the Indo-Pacific, but is restricted to the South Pacific (Fiji and Tonga).
This finding has important implications for the taxonomy of the group, as it demonstrates that nominal species from different parts of the Indo-Pacific that have been synonymized with Acropora tenuis Dana, 1846 on the basis of morphological characters represent distinct species that need to be resurrected.

Brook described the stony coral Madrepora bifaria, page 454, https://www.biodiversitylibrary.org/part/65055 from Java in 1892 from collections of the British Museum.
https://www.biodiversitylibrary.org/part/65055 was renamed Acropora bifaria on the basis of the above study.
